<html lang> attribute

SEOWeight 1.5% (This check's share of the SEO score)Score 100

What this is

Whether the page declares its language (the lang attribute on the html tag, e.g. zh-TW for Traditional Chinese in Taiwan).

Why it matters

Google says it doesn't use lang to detect a page's language, but browsers (for translation), screen readers (for pronunciation) and other search engines do use it. The effect is small, but it's easy to set.

What counts as passing

Present and correctly formatted (e.g. zh-TW, en) passes; present but malformed is a partial pass; missing fails.
